Jaundice

A clinical manifestation of hyperbilirubinemia, consisting of deposition of bile pigments in the skin, resulting in a yellowish staining of the skin and mucous membranes.


Bile

An emulsifying agent produced in the LIVER and secreted into the DUODENUM. Its composition includes BILE ACIDS AND SALTS; CHOLESTEROL; and ELECTROLYTES. It aids DIGESTION of fats in the duodenum.

Pigments

Any normal or abnormal coloring matter in plants, animals, or micro-organisms.

Skin

The outer covering of the body that protects it from the environment. It is composed of the DERMIS and the EPIDERMIS.
