Gallamine TriethiodideA synthetic nondepolarizing blocking drug. The actions of gallamine triethiodide are similar to those of TUBOCURARINE, but this agent blocks the cardiac vagus and may cause sinus tachycardia and, occasionally, hypertension and increased cardiac output. It should be used cautiously in patients at risk from increased heart rate but may be preferred for patients with bradycardia. (From AMA Drug Evaluations Annual, 1992, p198)
TachycardiaExcessive rapidity in the action of the heart, usually with a heart rate above 100 beats per minute.
HypertensionPersistently high systemic arterial BLOOD PRESSURE. Based on multiple readings (BLOOD PRESSURE DETERMINATION), hypertension is currently defined as when SYSTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently greater than 140 mm Hg or when DIASTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently 90 mm Hg or more.
PatientsIndividuals participating in the health care system for the purpose of receiving therapeutic, diagnostic, or preventive procedures.
RiskThe probability that an event will occur. It encompasses a variety of measures of the probability of a generally unfavorable outcome.
HeartThe hollow, muscular organ that maintains the circulation of the blood.
